Frequently Asked Questions

What is the source of the data?

Information is compiled from public data sources available from the U.S. Energy Information Administration at www.eia.gov and the U.S. Department of Agriculture at www.nass.usda.gov.

How often is data updated?

Datasets are updated as soon as new data is available from the original data source, typically weekly or monthly.  Some datasets are seasonal and only available during certain times of the year.

How can I receive updates?

You may receive updated information via email by clicking on the Subscribe button above.  Email updates are sent once per week.

Regular weekly email updates are scheduled to be sent by 1 p.m. Central Time every Thursday.  Following a major U.S. holiday or other change in data release schedule from the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), email updates will be sent 1 day later and/or upon receipt of updated data from EIA.

Where do I find information about an emergency declaration?

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration publishes federal, regional and state level active emergency declarations, waivers, exemptions and permits across the U.S. The Iowa Governor’s Office publishes information regarding state level declarations in Iowa. The Iowa Propane Gas Association provide links to emergency declarations and other information that specifically impact the status of propane shipments and deliveries in Iowa.

Why are some statistics highlighted in orange?

The orange shaded (or risk) areas in charts and data tables highlight values that are within 10% and/or exceed historical maximum or minimum values for the dataset.  If values are trending towards the historical range, there is the potential for supply chain stress and/or changing market dynamics.  For example, highlighted demand values between October and March may represent higher than normal propane demand based on seasonal weather conditions and/or the local harvest.  Conversely, high demand in the propane off season could be a positive sign of proactive, early tank fills in advance of fall/winter.  The notes on the bottom of each chart provide the context for the shaded area for each metric.

A variety of factors affect the current propane situation, not just a single metric.  Thus, the propane statistics should be evaluated in combination and in consultation with your local propane industry experts.

Where do I get more information about propane?

There are a variety of propane industry resources available, including your local propane supplier, the Iowa Propane Gas Association, as well as the Propane Education and Research Council.  Please also see the “Additional Resources” section on this page for other resources and support in Iowa.

Can I download the charts?

Downloading as a Tableau Workbook allows you to interact with the charts and data, using a free Tableau Reader app.  Download the app here.

By downloading the Tableau Workbook, you can also access the individual dashboards.

Can I filter the data?
